Summer (to sleep)

Summer (to sleep)

summer wants me back
in all my too-quiet glory.
under the chatter of reunions and falling leaves; commercial words to be sold
for admission, future;
and layers I wrap around my throat and face; we miss each other with
our discreet longing.

she knows the sensation in my stomach, can remedy it with sunshine,
the season of fulfillment who
wards away withering thoughts.

each night, she sets more
upon the trembling horizon
like an unblinking eye,
golden eyelashes and tears that become the earth, the people and splintering trees.

I know not what happens when the lids close for the last time.

Perhaps I let my own shut and
become my own sun for just one sleep.
