The Way the Light Slants

carving out space

into interludes

i am envious of a life

that is not mine

i scatter in

          wavelengths

toenail clippings that

garnish a floor

or a juice box

clumsy hands cascading

staining the carpet quickly

in the same shade of

          infrared

sitting unopened at my feet

the popsicles i used to crave

but couldn’t buy

but rather watched

others taste

staining tongue and teeth

          ultraviolet

envious of the color

i couldn’t seem to find

in other food

i stand corrected

with mouth lagging slightly

and with jaw clenched

heart full of love

          spectrum

but aware of its evaporation

these different bodies

poke holes at it

i am carving out space

in a space

where i am nothing

but the light

          i seek to reach
