Tiffany Stringer's "Feels Like Home"

Tiffany Stringer is an indie-pop artist living in Los Angeles, pursuing her life long dream. She’s been performing since she was a preteen in Texas before she moved to LA at seventeen. Her music is the kind you want to dance to—she’s unapologetically honest in each of her songs. Her newest single “Feels Like Home”—out today—is a nostalgic yet super danceable reflection on identity and how she’s finally come into her own. I had the chance to chat with her about staying creative in quarantine, writing and producing “Feels Like Home” in isolation, and what’s next for her music.

How would you introduce yourself to new listeners?

I'd say.... Hi I'm Tiffany Stringer, an indie-pop artist, singer, songwriter and human being.

My favorite activities are dancing under disco balls with my friends, driving with the windows down listening pop songs, walking on freshly cut grass with socks on, making new friends through music, and laughing so hard that I can't speak. My life mission is to follow what brings me joy and inspire others to do the same.

(BONUS) My latest obsessions are Dr. Pepper, the word 'heavenly', and the purple butterfly snapchat filter.

Obviously this is a really weird time. What have you been up to in quarantine? How have you been keeping yourself busy and creating?

I've been so grateful that my family and I are healthy and safe during this time. My days have been filled with playing guitar, journaling, live streaming, and learning to produce. I've also been watching lots of 'The Office', which is my favorite show, and sitting outside in my beautiful backyard.

Making lists of everything I'm grateful for has really been keeping me creative/happy too.

What inspired you to write this song as you were locked up at home?

So 'Feels Like Home' started as a rough idea last summer, but I couldn't bring myself to work on it after the initial idea.

All I had written was the pre-chorus lyrics and the acoustic guitar part. Honestly, I think I was afraid to finish it because I loved that part so much. I just wanted to make sure everything else lived up to it. Then quarantine started and I literally had nothing to do... so I said, "You know what? I'm gonna finish it. I'm finally going to do it." So that's what I did. I'd get so excited to wake up each day and work on it. This is the first song I've ever produced so it's been a very new and exciting experience for me.

The song is about your move from your hometown in Texas to LA. I’m from Texas and moving out to LA next year! I think a lot of people resonate with that dramatic change. What was that like for you? How did it change the way you looked at yourself? Or how did it change the person you actually are?

That makes me so happy to hear!!! Moving out to California was one the greatest things I've ever done and I am SO thankful that I live here. The biggest change for me was that being in a new environment gave me the opportunity to really ask myself who I wanted to be. It was literally a whole new world. I dyed my hair like fifteen different colors, met all different kinds of people, started listening to music I had never really heard before. Because of all that, I feel like I've really found who I am and what I enjoy.

The song is very nostalgic, but it’s also super uplifting and danceable. It definitely made me look back on who I used to be and who I am now and how things have changed. What was your inspiration behind the melodies and music production?

I've found that if I simply follow what excites me, then I will find whatever it is the song needs. I generally sing and play around with ideas until something makes me feel giddy!

As an artist, what is the one thing you’re trying to leave behind with your listeners?

I want those who listen to my music to know that EVERYTHING is possible for them. I want them to feel empowered to create their life the way they want it to be. We create the world around us through art!

Who are your biggest inspirations as a musician?

There are so many amazing artists that inspire me. The ones who literally changed the way I approach music are Gwen Stefani, Lorde, Charli XCX, Britney Spears, and Katy Perry. Just absolute QUEENS!

What do you have in store for the coming year?

A whole universe of music!!!!!!

“Feels Like Home” is out on all streaming platforms today!
